1 Corinthians 12:17-20
If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
More from the Merlot Shades journey this week: The absolute fun experienced while watching the team around us form. I am a designer in my mind and I see everyone coming together like colors on a beautiful painting.
"If two of you are alike, one of you unnecessary!" - PeeWee Dance, Harlem's Finest
Back in the day when people thought different than the way I thought, I would disconnect. I literally thought they were slowing me down from getting where I was going. I have learned that nothing can be further from the truth. Now with maturity, those are my favorite moments. I see the different hues of color in my partnerships now and I appreciate them more than my own.
Merlot Moment 1 - Law of Reciprocity
A critical component of team-building is understanding what is important to your teammates, and giving your time to it. The more I give my time and intellectual property to my teammates, the more the chemistry builds. I spend my resources on their products and ideas, and that same energy and effort returns to my products and ideas. What a journey it is to engage yourself into someone else's stratosphere. Sometimes it will feel like there is not enough time, energy or resources. But this is not true. For my basketball folks, as long as the ball moves there will be good energy, and good things will happen. (Synergy)
noun noun: synergy; plural noun: synergies; noun: synergism; plural noun: synergisms
the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects
It’s a ring shaped figure that's continous in flow but the objective is for nothing to get in, and nothing can get out, similar to what the wedding band represents. But this illustration is important because once you build the team, you build a trust and you have a loyalty to that team. There will be outside forces that will want to disjoint that team or tear that team apart. Your dream team will require your loyalty, your trust and your forgiveness. While everyone deserves your respect, not everyone deserves your time. Utilizing your time and energy for things outside of this circle will take away from what you have to give to your DREAMTEAM. Budget accordingly. Understand that you are choosing these other things over your DREAMTEAM. Don't steal from your DREAMTEAM by giving to others who won't value your time, creativity and energy. Yes, I am absolute in that manner. It’s a discipline. Everyone wasn't a disciple, Christ only had 12. (See Our Dirty Dozen page)
What is the covenant with you and your team? Do you meet regularly? How do you stay on the same page?
Growing up, I was crazy about the 1992 Olympic Men's Basketball Team that was called the "Dream Team". This team would beat other countries by an average of 50 points. This team showed the rest of the world what it took to play professional basketball as they changed the game worldwide. I remember Michael Jordan being the megastar, but I also remember Charles Barkley being the most dominant. Even the players that did not make the team but should have were generational legends, ex. Isiah Thomas. But to me it was the greatest team ever assembled. These same guys would compete against each other, even fight. But when it was time to come together for the same cause, they put their differences aside. They came together and created the most amazing chemistry the world had ever seen. From my perspective their biggest feat was rightsizing their egos for the moment.
Can you put your differences aside and come together to change the world? There are some people you know with undeniable ability who need you as you need them. Will you put aside your differences for destiny? Some of you are from the left wing, some of you from the right wing, but can you see the greatness in the differences and bring people together? Can love still be the greatest among them all? Do you have it in you? Are you a champion?
Merlot Moment 2 - The Breakdown
The DREAMTEAM should consist of 3 levels:
1. Some you are pulling up
3. Some pulling you up
See your team is a beautiful canvas.
Your differences are the vivid colors.
Your talents are the powerful paintbrushes.
Develop your team and find ways to grow their skillsets. Seek paths of not only inspiration but also education. Attend conferences and courses together. Share books as well. Also, make sure they spend time in their specific area of focus so that they become better at their craft than you.
Eat together. Break bread. Resort and recreate together. The Corporate World calls it team-building, but spending moments together away from the mission will build chemistry as well. Sometimes getting to know each other in different capacities improves communication.
There are many ideas that come to mind on this topic, but these are a few keys I have learned along the way that has worked for me. Together we achieve more.
Build your DREAMTEAM.
